Whakatōngia te aroha hai oranga mo te whānau,
Whakatōngia te kohara kia awe ai te iwi

Introduction

The Te Manawa Taki rohe has experienced Mental Health & Addiction workforce shortfalls for many years.  Building up our workforce means thinking how we attract people to work in our sector as a first choice, how we can present our work as an attractive option for those wanting to redirect their career aspirations and how we can enhance the knowledge and skills of those already working in the addiction and mental health sector.

There are a range courses and programmes offered across Te Manawa Taki and nationally. These options are currently difficult to navigate especially for people who do not know which pathway to take. For this reason, we have developed a visual framework for Te Manawa Taki, that will support people navigating the myriad of options.  The framework includes a range of courses from foundation programmes like introduction to Mental Health or Addiction for micro-credentialing, through to the NZQA formal qualification levels. It presents training and education helpful or essential to working in a range of roles including community support work, lived experience and peer whānau roles, clinical roles, and leadership.

We have used the harakeke as our basis for the mental health and addiction wellbeing framework to symbolise the learning journey you may take as part of the sector workforce. The roots are there to provide stability and ground you. Te Tiriti o Waitangi is at the base holding us strong and giving the fundamentals for moving forward. The awhi and tīpuna rito are what embrace us, building on our knowledge. Overarching this are the people we serve.
